Timkat 2027: How to Experience Ethiopian Epiphany

Timkat is Ethiopia's most colourful religious festival. Here is when it takes place in January 2027, what happens and where to experience it.

Timkat 2027: How to Experience Ethiopian Epiphany

Every January, Ethiopia's Orthodox Christians celebrate Timkat, the Epiphany, with processions, chanting, drums and huge crowds dressed in white. The festival commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, and it is one of the most moving and photogenic celebrations in Africa. In 2019, UNESCO added Ethiopian Epiphany to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

If you are thinking about visiting Ethiopia in January 2027, here is what to expect.

When is Timkat 2027?

  • Monday 18 January 2027: Ketera, the eve of Timkat
  • Tuesday 19 January 2027: Timkat, the main day

Timkat follows the Ethiopian calendar. It falls on 19 January in most years and on 20 January in leap years, such as 2028. In many places the celebrations continue on 20 January for the feast of Saint Michael, and the festive mood fills the whole week.

What happens during Timkat

The eve: On the afternoon of 18 January, priests carry each church's tabot, a sacred replica of the Ark of the Covenant wrapped in rich cloth, in procession to a nearby pool, river or open field. Crowds follow with singing, drumming and dancing, while clergy in brightly coloured robes carry ornate umbrellas and crosses. The tabots stay overnight in tents, surrounded by prayers and chanting that continue through the night.

Timkat morning: Early on 19 January, the water is blessed and sprinkled over the crowd to recall the baptism of Christ. Many people renew their baptismal vows.

The return: Later in the day, the tabots are carried back to their churches in joyful processions, with music and dancing in the streets.

Where to experience Timkat

Addis Ababa: The capital hosts one of the largest celebrations in the country. The main gathering takes place at Jan Meda, a large open field in the north of the city, where the tabots of many churches meet. You can also join smaller, more intimate processions from neighbourhood churches. For January 2027, Addis Ababa is the most practical place to experience Timkat, and it combines easily with our Addis Ababa City Tour and Addis Ababa Food Tour.

Gondar: Gondar is famous for one of the most spectacular Timkat celebrations of all. The pool at Fasilides' Bath is filled with water, and after the blessing many people jump in. In normal times, this is the highlight of a Timkat trip.

Lalibela: In Lalibela, Timkat takes place among the famous rock-hewn churches, where the chanting of priests in the ancient Ge'ez liturgy creates an unforgettable atmosphere.

A note on the north for 2027: Gondar and Lalibela are in the Amhara region, which is currently affected by conflict. Before planning Timkat in the north, please talk to us about the latest conditions.

Tips for visiting during Timkat

  • Book early. Hotels in Addis Ababa fill up and prices rise around Timkat, so reserve as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Arrive early. The best places to watch fill quickly, especially on the eve.
  • Dress modestly. Many Ethiopians wear white for Timkat. Light, modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is respectful.
  • Ask before photographing people. Priests and worshippers are generally welcoming, but always ask first and never block a procession.
  • Watch your belongings. The crowds are huge, so keep valuables secure.
  • Expect to get wet. If you stand near the blessing, you will be splashed, and that is part of the joy.
  • Go with a local guide. A guide can explain each ritual, find good places to watch and help you feel comfortable in the crowds.

Combining Timkat with the rest of your trip

Timkat falls in Ethiopia's dry season, which is a good time to travel. You could spend Timkat in Addis Ababa and then continue south on our 7-Day Omo Valley Cultural Journey, or take a day trip to Wonchi Crater Lake. Ethiopian Christmas, Genna, falls on 7 January, so a longer trip can include both festivals.
