Discover one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful highland destinations on a private day trip from Addis Ababa to Wonchi Crater Lake.

Located approximately 150 kilometres west of the capital, Wonchi lies within the caldera of an extinct volcano. The area is known for its dramatic crater scenery, green forests, farmland, mineral springs and peaceful lake.

Depart Addis Ababa early in the morning and travel west through the rolling landscapes and agricultural communities of the Oromia region. On arrival, enjoy panoramic views over the crater before beginning your descent toward the lake.

Depending on your preference and local conditions, you can walk or take a horseback ride through the crater landscape. At the lakeshore, take an optional local boat ride to Cherkos Monastery, situated on an island within the lake. Learn about the area’s religious traditions and enjoy the peaceful mountain environment.

Lunch will be served near the lake or at a local lodge overlooking the crater. In the afternoon, begin the return drive to Addis Ababa, arriving in the evening.

Itinerary

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Wonchi Crater Lake – Addis Ababa

Depart Addis Ababa early in the morning and drive west through the countryside of the Oromia region. Along the way, enjoy views of rolling farmland, highland villages and changing landscapes.

On arrival at Wonchi, stop at a viewpoint overlooking the crater lake and surrounding mountains. Your local guide will introduce you to the area’s volcanic landscape, communities and cultural history.

Begin the descent toward the lake by walking or taking an optional horseback ride. The route passes through green hills, farmland and small settlements.

At the lakeshore, take an optional boat ride to Cherkos Monastery, located on an island within Wonchi Crater Lake. Learn about the monastery’s spiritual importance and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Lunch will be served near the lake or at a local lodge with views over the crater.

After lunch, spend additional time enjoying the scenery before returning to Addis Ababa. Arrival is expected in the evening, depending on traffic and road conditions.
