Located approximately 110 kilometres north of the capital, Debre Libanos is one of Ethiopia’s most important monastery sites. The monastery was founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, one of the country’s most revered religious figures.
We pick you up from your hotel in Addis Ababa at 7:00 AM and travel through the rolling highlands north of the city. Along the way, enjoy views of rural communities, farmland and the dramatic Jemma River Gorge.
Visit Debre Libanos Monastery and learn about its spiritual importance, history and connection to Saint Tekle Haymanot. Depending on access and local arrangements, the visit may also include nearby religious sites associated with the saint.
Continue to the Portuguese Bridge, a historic stone bridge overlooking the gorge. Despite its name, the bridge is generally believed to date from the late 19th century, long after the Portuguese presence in Ethiopia. Enjoy panoramic views, a short walk and a local coffee stop. Gelada baboons are sometimes seen on the surrounding cliffs and grasslands, although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Return to Addis Ababa in the late afternoon or early evening after a relaxing cultural and nature experience.

Itinerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Debre Libanos – Portuguese Bridge – Addis Ababa
Hotel pickup in Addis Ababa at 7:00 AM, then drive north through the Ethiopian highlands. Enjoy views of rural villages, farmland and mountain scenery along the way.
Arrive at Debre Libanos Monastery, one of Ethiopia’s most significant religious sites. Explore the monastery with your guide and learn about its foundation by Saint Tekle Haymanot, its importance to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the traditions connected to the area.
After the monastery visit, continue to the Portuguese Bridge near the Jemma River Gorge. Walk around the bridge and nearby viewpoints while enjoying views across the cliffs and valley.
The surrounding area is home to Gelada baboons, which may sometimes be seen feeding or moving across the highland grasslands.
Enjoy lunch and a local coffee stop before beginning the return journey to Addis Ababa.
Arrive back in the capital in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic and road conditions.
