Located approximately 110 kilometres north of the capital, Debre Libanos is one of Ethiopia’s most important monastery sites. The monastery was founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, one of the country’s most revered religious figures.
Depart Addis Ababa in the morning and travel through the rolling highlands north of the city. Along the way, enjoy views of rural communities, farmland and the dramatic Jemma River Gorge.

Itinerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Debre Libanos – Portuguese Bridge – Addis Ababa
Depart Addis Ababa in the morning and drive north through the Ethiopian highlands. Enjoy views of rural villages, farmland and mountain scenery along the way.
Arrive at Debre Libanos Monastery, one of Ethiopia’s most significant religious sites. Explore the monastery with your guide and learn about its foundation by Saint Tekle Haymanot, its importance to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the traditions connected to the area.
After the monastery visit, continue to the Portuguese Bridge near the Jemma River Gorge. Walk around the bridge and nearby viewpoints while enjoying views across the cliffs and valley.
The surrounding area is home to Gelada baboons, which may sometimes be seen feeding or moving across the highland grasslands.
Enjoy lunch and a local coffee stop before beginning the return journey to Addis Ababa.
