Tour overview
Located in northeastern Ethiopia, the Danakil Depression is a dramatic land of salt, fire and geological extremes. Its landscapes include colourful sulfur springs, steaming geothermal fields, immense salt flats, volcanic craters and remote Afar communities.
Beginning and ending in Semera, the expedition travels through the desert to Lake Afdera, the brilliant white salt plains of Lake Assale and the unusual geothermal formations of Dallol.
The journey continues to Erta Ale, one of Ethiopia’s most famous active volcanoes. After travelling across the desert, hike toward the crater area in the cooler evening hours and camp near the volcano.
This expedition combines geology, adventure, photography and desert camping, offering a rare opportunity to experience one of the most unusual regions in Africa.
Access to volcanic areas and the exact route may change according to volcanic activity, weather, road conditions and instructions from local authorities and guides.

Important Safety Note
The Danakil Depression is an extreme environment with high temperatures, rough roads and basic camping facilities. Volcanic conditions can change, and access to Erta Ale or Dallol may be adjusted by guides or local authorities.
Guests should follow all instructions from the expedition team and have suitable travel insurance covering remote-area and adventure travel.
Itinerary
Day 1: Semera to Lake Assale and Hamedela
Begin the expedition in Semera after arriving on a morning flight from Addis Ababa.
Meet the expedition team and start driving into the Danakil Depression. The route descends through a dry and dramatic landscape that lies below sea level.
Stop near Lake Afdera for lunch and Ethiopian coffee. Lake Afdera is a salt lake surrounded by volcanic desert scenery and is used locally for salt and mineral extraction.
Continue off-road toward Hamedela, the main base for exploring Dallol and Lake Assale.
In the late afternoon, visit the vast salt plains of Lake Assale. The white salt surface reflects the colours of the setting sun, creating excellent opportunities for photography.
Return to camp for dinner.

Day 2: Dallol and Erta Ale Volcano
Start the morning with an excursion to Dallol, one of the Danakil Depression’s most unusual geological areas.
Walk through a landscape of vivid mineral colours, sulfur deposits, steaming vents, salt formations and geothermal pools. Your guide will explain how volcanic activity, minerals and extreme heat have shaped the area.
After exploring Dallol, return for lunch before continuing through desert landscapes and Afar settlements toward the base of Erta Ale volcano.
Arrive in the late afternoon and prepare for the hike. As temperatures begin to cool, start the approximately one-to-two-hour walk toward the crater area.
Spend the evening observing the volcanic landscape, subject to current volcanic conditions and official access restrictions.
Dinner and camping will be arranged near the volcano.

Day 3: Erta Ale Sunrise and Return to Semera
Wake before dawn for another opportunity to observe Erta Ale and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
After sunrise, return to camp for breakfast and begin descending toward the vehicle base.
Continue driving through the Danakil Desert, stopping for lunch near Lake Afdera where possible.
After lunch, travel back to Semera and conclude the expedition.
Guests continuing to Addis Ababa may take an evening domestic flight, depending on the confirmed airline schedule.
