Itinerary
Day 1 – Semera to Lake Assale (Hamedela)
Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera (ET 110, 7:00 AM). Begin your drive into the
Danakil Desert, descending through a barren yet beautiful landscape that lies below sea level.
Stop for lunch and coffee by Lake Afdera, a shimmering salt lake used for mineral extraction,
before continuing off-road toward Dallol.
In the late afternoon, explore Lake Assale, where the white salt flats reflect the colors of the
setting sun — a perfect scene for photography and quiet reflection.
Overnight: Camping at Hamedela
Day 2 – The Colorful Dallol & Erta Ale Volcano
Start the morning exploring Dallol, one of the most otherworldly places on the planet. Walk
among steaming geysers, sulfur pools, and vivid mineral deposits — a true natural wonder.
After lunch, travel through Afar villages and desert landscapes to reach the base of Erta Ale
Volcano. As the sun sets, begin your gentle 1–2 hour hike to the crater rim.Spend the night camping at the top, near the glowing lava lake — an unforgettable highlight of the Danakil.
Overnight: Camping on the rim of Erta Ale
Day 3 – Erta Ale & Return to Semera
Wake before dawn for a close-up view of Erta Ale’s lava lake, one of only five permanent lava
lakes in the world. Feel the heat and watch the molten lava swirl beneath your feet.
After breakfast, descend to the base and enjoy lunch by Lake Afdera before driving back to
Semera for your return flight to Addis Ababa (ET 110, 5:15 PM).

Birhanu wasn't available but our tour guide Dessu was great. Ethiopia is a fascinating country and we hit the high points, particularly the stone churches in Lalibela. Dessu did an outstanding job, always flexible, knowledgeable, and great fun to travel with. Some of the local guides struggled with English but Dessu stepped in and translate for us.Can strongly recommend Birhanu or Dessu to provide an outstanding tour of Ethiopia.
